The new Highland Park-Highwood Legal Aid Clinic wasn’t even officially open on May 1 when the first cases involving tenants’ rights required some immediate attention.
Tenants will learn their legal rights on security deposits, how to avoid eviction and what landlords can and cannot do under state law. The forum also will address what landlords are required to do under local housing ordinances and when to contact local government or an attorney.
Speakers at the forum will include John Tilton, building division manager for the city of Highland Park; Oliver Jury, the landlord-tenant specialist for housing advocacy group Open Communities, and one of the clinic’s attorneys.
