Open Communities applauds Cook County officials for passing a minimum wage increase to $13. This is a major step in addressing poverty wages and resulting economic injustice. Many of the people living in the northern suburban communities we serve cannot afford to pay the rent. Many who work here can’t afford transportation costs. Mandating an increase in the minimum wage that brings us closer to a living wage is the least we can do to help our neighbors get by.
According to the MIT Living Wage Calculator, an adult working full-time with one child must earn $24.91 to make a living wage.
We look forward to collaborating with community partners and elected officials to ensure that we keep making Cook County more just and welcoming for everyone who lives and works here.
